Charl makes cyanotypes - images based on an antique photo processing method discovered in 1842. Mix two basic chemicals and apply to a piece of paper. After applying a negative and leaving it in the sun for a few minutes, a blueish image magically appears on the paper.
He is drawn to cyanotypes because the development process produces results that are unpredictable and unexpected due to variances in the sun’s intensity, and the quality of the water, chemicals and paper used in the process. This forces him to surrender control and submit to the ethereal and whimsical within the development process. He enjoys the mystical element that cyanotypes add to conventional photographic processes, which in the current age is driven by digital innovation. Here, every image is a surprise and a joyful, tactile experience.
