Artist’s Statement: Humble Apologies (2024)

The title of the exhibition is drawn from WhatsApp messages distributed to citizens by the Makana  Municipality Communications Office reporting on service delivery outages between 2022 - 2024. 

During this period, near total municipal collapse has driven widespread infrastructure failure and repeated service delivery breakdowns across the small city. This has included negative economic growth, environmental degradation, large scale unemployment, increased social difficulties, repeated failed audits, fruitless and wasteful expenditure, and irregular procedures by the Makana Municipality Council.

The images in this street photography series covers a small area of city exploring memory anchors, human positionality, dereliction, and proposes an analog (re)presentation of shifting social and living spaces.

The photographs were shot exclusively on 35mm Ilford (400) black-and-white film using only a Canon A-1 camera and 50mm (f/1.8) lens.
